Tulamben - Part 2

3 Feb 2006

This is the day I'm testing the camera and its underwater housing.

1st dive was at 9 am to Batu Kelebit. Instead of shore dive went in the waters via fishermen's outriggers. It was so small we donned our equipment in the water.

A Nudie Branch

2nd dive was at the house reef. It was a blast this time!!! Managed to see an octopus, a Black-tip shark and the cleaner shrimps.

This is a Moorish Idol, not Malaysian. Siap posing lagi

Some corals/fauna pics

3rd dive was a night dive to the Liberty wreck. Went in just before sunset and surfaced about 40 minutes later. Since Tulamben is like a wall (no gentle slope for a beach), we surfaced immediately upon clearance of the wreck. A lot can be seen during the night dive...how fishes sleep etc etc.

Last day for diving. Decided to cut short one dive as need them to be dry for next day's travelling. Oh ya, we had no sun for the last couple of days. Cloudy and sporadic rain.

1st dive was to Kubu, about 4kms from Matahari. This is the best site so far. Understand from Oka that not many divers know about this place.

This is the best pic of the Nudie Branch. Unfortunately pic taken by Stanley's Olympus (another diver)

2nd and last dive was at drop-off again. This time Oka led and showed us the Gargantuan Sea Fan. Damn Huge

Tulamben, Bali 1 - 5 Feb 2006

Needing to recharge my batteries, went on a diving trip to Tulamben, Bali from 1 - 5 February 2006.

1 Feb 2006

Flew by MAS MH0853 1450 hrs and arrived at Denpasar 1750 hrs. Bali has the same time as KL. At Ngurah Rai Airport, Oka, the resort owner/divemaster was already waiting for us.

Tulamben is situated on the North-east of Bali, about 3 hours drive from the airport. if you're the clubbing type..tough!. No nightspots here at all as it is very very kampung place.

Along the way, stopped at Citra Rasa for dinner. Oka informed during dinner that as a respect to me, the only muslim there, no Babi Guling would be served for the duration.

By the time we reached Matahari it was already late and we bunked in for the night. My roomie was Choy, who would also be my dive buddy.

The rates for diving

My wetsuit. This is my second. Bare was good enough to exchange it (for free) when I found a defect in the earlier suit which I used in Tenggol. Colours not the same though. The old one was all blue

1st dive was to the USS Liberty wreck. The supply ship was torpedoed by the Japs in 1942 and was towed there before it sank near the shore. In 1963 (If I read the leaflet correctly) Mount Agong blew its top and broke the ship into two and pushed the stern part deeper into the sea.

2nd dive was at Tulamben Drop-Off and the 3rd was at the headland. Oh ya, all dives were from the shore.

This is the beach at Tulamben. All rocks/pebbles due to its close proximity to the volcano (unlike in Kuta). Even the sea doesn't taste that salty

All pics taken using the Canon. Did not use it underwater on the 1st day as wanted to enjoy dives without having to use the camera.

To be continued

Stockholm 16-18 November 2005

Flew back to Stockholm on 16 November. Stayed at Birger Jarlsg Hotel, a Boutique Hotel. Damn posh!!!!

By the time we got there it was already evening and everyone too tired (and cold) to go out. Chai, Kim and I did however sneaked out to the nearest pub for drinks.

The next day went out the whole day for some (last) minute shopping (mostly done by the government official).

Dinner at the Kebab shop (which I went earlier)

On the way to the airport saw this bloody shop. Missed it!!!!! Dainese!!!!! Ddddaaaammmmnnnn!!!!!!!

If you like bikes, dainese are THE products you need to have for protection.

The flight back was okay. Didn't sleep at all, watched all the movies on board. Arrived in KLIA around 6 am.

THE END

Denmark 13 -15 Nov 2005

Next morning, from Aalborg drove down to Torsminde via Hobro, Viborg, Holsterbro and up again to the coast. Today was the day Denmark was hit by storm. Bloody cold and windy.

Torsminde is a protected harbour with a typical breakwater protecting the fishing boats within the harbour. Dredging is done year round to prevent the opening from being covered by sand.

We then drove south along the coastal road towards Sondervig where our test site is.

Walking backwards towards the sea. Can't walk facing the sea as it was too painful the sand pricking your face

If you like fish (any fish), this is the place to eat. You can even bring your own fish and ask them to cook it for you.

After dinner drove down to Bilund to catch our flight to Copenhagen. Billund is Legos are made. By the time we got there, the shops were closed. They sell them cheap too, compared against Copenhagen.

Lifesize R2D2 made from Lego. Also have Darth Vader and Boba Fett

Dr. Jan met us at the airport in Copenhagen and drove us down to our hotel, The Esplanaden, which is close to the Royal Palace (two blocks down only). A real upmarket place and very arty-farty. Went to a pub that night with Dr. Jan, Chain & wife. Tony and Louise joined us later. My Fanta costs more than a local beer!

It was here that snow fell when we were having lunch in one of the restaurant. Yay!! Snow at last.
